AirBNB Homes are Risky and Dangerous

Airbnb can be convenient for travelers, but it can also be risky—especially if the property was never professionally inspected before being rented out. Many homeowners assume their house is safe simply because it’s been lived in, or because it “looks fine.” However, even minor hidden problems can pose serious hazards to guests.

Without a home inspection, structural issues, electrical faults, plumbing leaks, or fire hazards may go unnoticed. For example:

  • Electrical issues could cause fires.
  • Gas leaks or poorly maintained appliances may be life-threatening.
  • Plumbing leaks can lead to mold or water damage.
  • Faulty stairs, railings, or decks can result in injuries.
  • Unstable foundation, possibly because it is a beach front property built on sand.

Airbnb hosts have a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure their property is safe. Renting a home without inspection is essentially putting faith over evidence, leaving both guests and hosts vulnerable. A home inspector can uncover hidden dangers, recommend repairs, and help protect both lives and liability.

In short: renting a home without inspection is like letting someone move into a house built on sand—you might not see the problem now, but a disaster could strike unexpectedly.

Before renting a home on AirBNB ask the homeowner when was the last time it was inspected by a home inspector. Contact www.moffatinspections.ca for home inspections in Ajax Ontario.

And if the home is literally a beach front property built on sand, maybe think twice about renting it.
